English – Year 9 Readathon

image003The Year 9 Readathon has drawn to a close, with students raising a fantastic £285.77 for CLIC Sargent and Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. Over their Christmas holidays, all of Year 9 were encouraged by their English teachers to endeavour to read a range of books and collect sponsors for the completion of the reading. With the support of Miss Leaphard, as well as a newly compiled list of book recommendations and a launch from the Library, the pupils headed off for three weeks of turkey, tinsel and literature.

We are delighted that so many of the students read so widely with such enthusiasm over the busy Christmas period and the money they raised will be put towards paying for authors to make hospital visits, setting up modern and child friendly libraries in hospitals, and also to help fund research into childhood cancers. Special mention needs to be made of Lily Cartmell, who read an impressive nine books in the three weeks, and Peter Lewis and Tom Monaghan who both totalled five books, including some fairly hefty Tolkien!
