In Chapel this week the College marked World Book Night, held on Tuesday, 23rd April, a day chosen because it was both UNESCO’s International Day of the Book and also the anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth and death.
This is an event in which 20,000 volunteers give away twenty copies of a chosen book with titles ranging from Treasure Island to Girl with a Pearl Earring. The event is now in its third year and this is the second time that Dr Noble has been able to participate on behalf of the College.
This year her book of choice, given away to twenty of our students, wasA Little History of the World by E.H. Gombrich. In forty chapters Gombrich tells the story of man from the stone age to the atomic bomb and there emerges a colourful picture of wars, conquests, grand works of art, the spread of science and tribes evolving towards society.
